I have a pasture of Bahia and common Bermuda grass mixed. Will one or the other take over?

Probably not entirely. Bahia and Bermuda are pretty common in pastures here in Central Texas and I have seen them growning along side each other for a long time. They will expand and contract as conditions favor one of the other but with out cultural inputs to remove one or the other they will both stay.

Just took over management of a ranch located in Austin County, norhteast of Bellville. We are on deep sandy soil with established coastal bermuda grass. The problem has been lack on management thus allowing bahia grass to get a good foothold in some of our pastures. The owner wants to control; or more like wipe out the bahiagrass. What do you recommend to use. When do you apply it and method of application..Also when would you retreat the pastures, and what is the cost per acre for the chemical..

Charles,
Cimarron, put out by Du Pont, will do a very good job of controlling Bahiagrass in your Bermudagrass pastures. The prescribed rate is 3/10 oz per acre and you should apply it in the spring after green up and before the seedhead sets and with good soil moisture. It’s too late to apply this year.

It is also recommended that if you have dense coverage that you not apply to everything at once because this will lead to a lot of open ground before the Bermuda has a chance to cover. So maybe break the denser patches up into a couple of different spraying maybe and depending on the size of the patches you might want to do it in several different years.

As always read the label on the herbicide and follow all regulations when applying it.

What harm does it do to a coastal hay field if you graze it before winter after making the last cutting?

We have a mixed hayfield of Bahia and Burmuda. Our vet recently said 'don't feed to horses until freshly- cut hay has "seasoned" 30 days. Is this a valid statement, we have fed our horses freshly-cut rolled hay before this year.????
