I have a field that was fertilized last April and has grown a decent stand of Coastal hay. I have tried all summer to get it baled but with the excessive rain it was not possible. I do not have my own haying equipment so I am at the mercy of contactors to get this done. Now this week we may have a chance to get it baled but I am wondering if it is too late. It is very course and stemmy now. I suspect the protein content is way down and with cooler weather here it is browning fast. My other option is to turn cattle out onto it and graze it down instead of baling it. What would be best? If I baled it I'd have some excess to sell and hopefully recoup the cost of the fertilizer for next spring. On the other hand if it will just make poor hay now it may not be worth baling/selling.

I would graze it. With a record year for hay, it's every where and cheap. You might have a hard time selling yours then your out the money for bailing.
