NIRS White-Tailed Deer ProjectGiven the success of NIRS technology for free-ranging livestock, the logical next step was to apply the technology to wildlife. Graduate research assistant Scott Showers worked on a project to establish a viable NIRS predictive equation for white-tailed deer in Texas. Vegetation was gathered from different areas of Texas to construct natural diets and then used in feeding trials conducted over the summer of 1996. This equation is now in use. Scott Showers conducted his feeding trials the summer of 1996 in Nacogdoches, Texas with the aid of Dr. James Kroll and Ben Koerth of the Institute for White-Tailed Deer Management & Research at Stephen F. Austin State University.
