Upon receipt of the fecal sample, the information on the sheets is entered into the GAN Lab database and given a sample number.
Then, the samples are placed in a paper tray and placed in a drying oven to extract all moisture.
After the samples are dried for 24 hours, they are ground to a uniform particle size.
The samples are then placed into a small envelope and and put back into the oven for another 24 hours to remove excess moisture.
They are removed from the oven and a representative portion of the sample is packed into a small ring cup with a glass face. Finally, the ring cups are placed into a NIRS 6500 series machine and scanned using NIR spectrometry. The feces are exposed to light energy and the intensity of reflectance of several hundred wavelengths in the near infrared band is gauged. The spectrum values are then correlated with our equations developed from several calibration sets.
