Guide to Body Condition Scoring
- Look at the last two ribs of the animal (12th & 13th). If you see the 12th & 13th rib, the animal is below a 5. If you do not see the 12th and 13th rib, it is a 5 or above.
- If you see the Transverse Process (short rib), it is a 3 or less.
- Look between the Hook and Pins (Upper hip):
A. If you see a very strong V and the Transverse Processes are prominent, it is a 1 or a 2.
B. If you see a strong V and the Transverse Processes are slightly noticeable, then it is a 3.
C. If you see a V shape, but the Transverse Processes are not noticeable, then it is a 4.
D. If you see a strong U shape, then it is a 5.
E. If you see a shallow U shape, then it is a 6.
- Next, switch views from the side to the rear and look down the animal’s back.
A. If there is a tepee effect and the animal’s backbone is prominent, it is a 5.
B. If the animals back is flat across, then it is a 6.
C. If there is a shallow U shaped indention along the backbone, it is a 7.
D. If there is a prominent U shaped indention along the backbone, it is an 8.
E. If the animal has a prominent U shaped indention along the backbone and has trouble walking due to excess fat, then it is a 9.
